Lets see what Wikipedia say about AE86.
The Toyota Corolla Levin/Sprinter Trueno (AE86) is a small, lightweight coupe introduced by Toyota in 1983 as part of the fifth generation Toyota Corolla line-up. For the purpose of brevity, the insider-chassis code of “AE86″ is used to describe the whole range. In classic Toyota code, the “A” represents the engine that came in the car (the 4A) and the E86 represents the 6th revision of the fifth generation (E80 series) of the E model which is the Corolla. The main difference between the Levin and Trueno is that the former has fixed-headlights whilst the latter has pop-up headlights; the export Corolla name covers both variations. The AE86 (along with the lower spec AE85 versions) was rear wheel drive (unlike the front wheel drive AE82 models), and is said to be the last rear-drive car of its type, at a time when most passenger cars were being switched to front-drive. The AE86 was replaced in 1987 by the front wheel drive AE92 Corolla/Sprinter range.

Why many people choose AE86 as a drift car ? Based on my interview with one of the drfiter during the D1, the answer is so simple AE86 has a sweet shape and can drift very well and is one of the most well known drift car in the world, and of course its RWD
Eventhough it may lack of power compared to other turbocharged drift cars but is still good at drifting. The fact that we cant denied was AE86 featured in many main drift events with people winning events with it.
AE86 also known as Hachi-roku in Japan which means Eight Six (86). The AE86 was first produced in 1984 in Japan with 2 versions i.e. Levin and Trueno. The Trueno had pop up headlights.

AE86 History
The history of the AE86 dates back to 1983 when it was released on the Japanese Domestic Market. Although new sales weren’t amazing, the AE86 has developed a huge international following both in the street and racing scenes. In this section I will show the variations of the AE86, expain it’s history and why it is still a popular car today.
AE86 Versions
The AE86 was first produced in 1983 in Japan and this continued until half way through 1987. During this time there were two distinct versions produced, the zenki and the kouki. These two versions can be distinguished by their front indicators and their rear lights. The zenki has small front mounted indicators and rear lights with the word ‘SPRINTER’ across the top of the right light. The kouki has larger corner mounted front indicators and rear lights with either a red band across the top or a black band with a white stripe.
The AE86 was available in two body types, these were the coupe and the hatchback. The hatchback is the frame most enthusiasts think of when discussing the AE86.
